Mauritshuis collection
The Girl with a Pearl Earring by Johannes Vermeer, Rembrandt’s The Anatomy Lesson of Dr. Nicolaes Tulp or The Goldfinch by Carel Fabritius, who doesn’t know them? They may be world-famous paintings but does everyone know these masterpieces’ backgrounds and that they can be admired in Het Mauritshuis?

The Goldfinch: A Bird’s-Eye View
What is the best way of demonstrating that a whole world can be hidden behind even a tiny painting like The Goldfinch? For the Mauritshuis, we developed a website that tells the many surprising stories behind the painting that we know nothing about. By bringing the background of this artwork to the attention of the general public – both young and old – they become familiar with not only the painting but the museum itself.  For instance, we highlight the Mauritshuis as a knowledge centre for the art of painting during the Golden Age and at the same time we hope to make coming to see the painting in real life more accessible.
